Per Vas' request, I'm throwing this up to a vote:
Would you find it helpful to have a page, or something on the main page that alerts you to when one of your submitted links or a link you've commented on has been responded to?
Example 1:
You submit a link--don't give it a second thought--but everyone else and their mother has a second thought about it. If you're checking the RSS feed or your link and it's comment tally has dropped past the visible point on the LS front page you'd never know when somebody has commented. With a separate page, or main page box, this link would be bumped to the top of your list for your reading pleasure.
Example 2:
You find a link and it immediately becomes the reason you are alive. Person A, B, and C all think something completely different. Queue the flame war. Normally, these sort of things die out because somebody stops checking the thread. To allow flame wars to continue for your children to take over for you, personalized link bumping would alert you to any dissent to your superior opinion.
Yaeah or Naeah? |

like the forum shite and journal shite boxes?
yes, i'm lazy and cant be bothered to click the talking shit and navigate away from the front page.
how many people use the menu box, or even know what its there for? i've used it now and again by sticking search boxes/links/java scripts in, but with the quick-links bar in firefox its kind of redundant for me, unless someone uses it for purposes other than favourite links.

The phrase 'Flame War Assistant' has me sold. Here's what I'm thinking. Disagree/agree as desired.
I add a small faggoty icon to the front page, something like the "you have new private messages" icon, alerting you that some faggot has commented on your shit.

o no u di'n't
It would look much like that, though I'd probably pick a somewhat less faggoty icon that looked cool while still implying "Update!" or "Who the fuck?".
This icon tells you...
- Someone commented on a link you submitted, or
- Someone commented on a link you commented on
NB: This will work only for link comments. It will not work for forum posts or journal updates or whatever. It's possible to look into that, but it's going to require a lot of people saying they want that, cause that would make it a lot more work.
When clicked, it'd take you to your home page, wherein you'd see a little box, just like any other ugly fucking box on this piece of shit websight, listing out in reverse chronological order all links that you submitted or commented on that had comments...

Like so.
This feature would probably not have any options associated -- i.e., you probably could not disable it.
I'd have to figure out a way to make it fuck off once you had checked everything out or a certain period of time had passed or something.
I could possibly make it like the clipswarm and give you little delete links for each line, and then give some kind of one-month (or so) expiration for those of you that would never ever use it and don't need 40,000 lines appearing in a box on your account page. (This would make it less useful for people returning after a month-long absence who wanted to catch up on prior conversations.)
This will take some thinking, because the way in which I make sure people don't have a shitload more info to deal with will determine how useful it is to the people who do want a shitload more info to deal with.
Help me figure that part out, or any other part you may or may not have had a useful thought on.

i like the idea.
it might just be me, though, but i don't know if lumping the two types together (willy-nilly) is all that exciting for me. i mean, i don't necessarily care about the two equally at any given time.
differentiating them through icons would be kinda hot, though:
like for - Someone commented on a link you submitted (i.e. mine)
and for - Someone commented on a link you commented on
as far as pushing stuff off the list, what about only listing X unique links? i mean, it doesn't matter if fartmouth and shitneck both comment on 'pictures of wotak's wife', just as long as you know that link has been commented on since you last checked. old ones would roll off into the abyss.

I had envisioned doing just that. If someone wants a list of all commenters on a link, they can hit the talking shit page, or go to that link directly. This would be a view showing which links had recent activity, basically -- like you describe.
mundhra: it might just be me, though, but i don't know if lumping the two types together (willy-nilly) is all that exciting for me. i mean, i don't necessarily care about the two equally at any given time.
How common is this point of view among those of you interested in seeing this feature? Me, I'd probably care equally about commentary to things I had submitted and commentary to things I had commented on.

honestly, the more i think about it the more it seems ok if i have to do the mental work of sorting out an unimportant link i submitted from a comment flamewar vs assface as opposed to a link of 'jesus was gay' from a comment of 'nice link, thanks.'
other options on the retention are: clear it after checking the list; and a batch delete to manually clear the list (as opposed to a delete on each entry).

So, anyone out there in Links Warm land bored enough to assist me and Vas with this? It would probably be an enormous job for everyone involved, the least I could personally do is donate a year of paid Alpha for you.

Seconded on all points. If you're keen on helping with that project, please PM me.
EDIT: In fact, here -- this is as far as I'd gotten about 6 months ago, then life intruded once again and I had to put it down. As I recall, aside from the width causing some items to render funny in IE, I was interested in seeing how it looked with all the sub-menu items floated left, and I needed to figure out how to de-highlight the 'Swarm' tab when hovering over other tabs. Full fileset here for your convenience. PSDs available upon request so you can make new tabs or whatever.
To the matter at hand -- yes, I could just make this a setting, but that's wandering down a road that leads to a bunch of decisions I'd rather not make. I'd prefer to keep this relatively small and find defaults everyone can live with.

I like the idea of having the comment box on your home page. It would be cool if the date/time of the last bump would be shown, and only show unique links once (i.e. if 10 people have commented, show the link only once in the comment box)
This would benefit two-fold:
1) Swarmey's would be able to see when things have been updated by remembering when they last looked, or just keep going back until they start recalling comments.
2) Save some ass time for whoever is coding this since it wouldn't require "x" boxes, or user input. Just a few boolians (is user involved with thread? Yes -> Updated since user's last post? Yes -> Record date and time of latest post and bump the user's homepage)
I don't think that the average user would need more than 10 threads at once (maybe the option of clicking "Older" if it's easy enough to code -- see point 2 above). Don't let the user choose how many they see.
PS - You can get rid of the "Receive email notification of new replies" that's below where I'm typing this right now. Perhapse put a link in the "Post Reply" page to advertise the new feature. instead. |

I could possibly base it on last-comment-date-by-you. From watching other people try to solve this problem, it's actually a lot more nuanced than you'd think, short of tracking every read in a database. I suspect whatever the first solution is will solve about 70% of the actual problem and the other 30% won't become totally obvious til we've used it a bit.
Also, it appears you did not nota very bene.
vasudeva: NB: This will work only for link comments. It will not work for forum posts or journal updates or whatever. It's possible to look into that, but it's going to require a lot of people saying they want that, cause that would make it a lot more work.

I don't know -- your link is borked. Please expand and/or correct in this thread, which is where any discussion of Dent's design should be from here out, so we can keep shit straight.
Here's what I'm thinking about the Flamewar Assistant idea (which metatr0n is now demanding I call RApeDAR): the block on your homepage would show links you interacted with, that had new not-you activity , going back for the last 30/60 days. The little alert icon on the front page would only go back for 2/3 days.
I say this because it occurred to me that unless you went around commenting on goddamn everything, that alert icon would be just about always on, and thus not super useful. This way it only alerts you to really recent activity, and to check further back, just hit your account page.
Yes/no?

This is now visible on your account page. If you haven't submitted or commented on anything in 31 days, you should see nothing.
Mouse over one of the links, and you'll get a timestamp. If, in the FORUMS, you click the Profile link and set your time zone (time offset), it'll use that to show you the time in your timezone.
If that works the way we want it, I'll put the "last two days" alert icon on the front page.
Can anyone find a non-gay image for that? I know the answer is no, thanks in advance.
EDIT: ALSO, and I know this will make at least one mundhra-type individual do a backflip, this modification means I can bring back the "last commenter: yourmom" hover tooltip on front page links. What's interesting about this is that I remember when I disabled it being embarrassed at how stupid I had been in implementing it, because clearly I had done it all wrong and really slowed the page way down so bad I had to remove it entirely. Re-enabling it now, years later, I'm similarly embarrassed at how simple the fix turned out to be, and have no idea why I didn't spend the 4 minutes actually thinking it out years ago.
