Gore Talks About What Might Not Have Been, Compares Obama to Lincoln
August 28, 2008 9:08 PM
DENVER, Colorado -- Former Vice President Al Gore started his speech tonight by talking about how the world would be different had he ended up in the White House in 2000.
"Eight years ago, some said there was not much difference between the nominees of the two major parties and it didn’t really matter who became president," Gore said. "Our nation was enjoying peace and prosperity. Some assumed we would continue both, no matter the outcome. But here we all are in 2008, and I doubt anyone would argue now that election didn’t matter.
"Take it from me," Gore continued," if it had ended differently, we would not be bogged down in Iraq, we would have pursued bin Laden until we captured him. We would not be facing a self-inflicted economic crisis; we would be fighting for middle-income families. We would not be showing contempt for the Constitution; we’d be protecting the rights of every American, regardless of race, religion, disability, gender or sexual orientation. And we would not be denying the climate crisis; we’d be solving it."
Gore said the choice between Sens. Barack Obama, D-Ill., and John McCain, R-Ariz., "may be even more obvious now, because John McCain, a man who has earned our respect on many levels, is now openly endorsing the policies of the Bush-Cheney White House, and promising to actually continue them."
Said Gore incredulously, "the same policies all over again? Hey, I believe in recycling, but that’s ridiculous. With John McCain’s support, President Bush and Vice President Cheney have led our nation into one calamity after another because of their indifference to fact; their readiness to sacrifice the long term to the short term, subordinate the general good to the benefit of the few and short-circuit the rule of law."
Gore also compared Obama to Abraham Lincoln, saying that "before he entered the White House, Abraham Lincoln’s experience in elective office consisted of eight years in his state legislature in Springfield, Ill., and one term in Congress –- during which he showed the courage and wisdom to oppose the invasion of another country, that was popular when it started, but later condemned by history.
"The experience Lincoln’s supporters valued most in that race was his powerful ability to inspire hope in the future at a time of impasse," Gore said. "He was known chiefly as a clear thinker and a great orator, with a passion for justice and a determination to heal the deep divisions of our land. He insisted on reaching past partisan and regional divides, to exalt our common humanity. In 2008, once again, we find ourselves at the end of an era with a mandate from history to launch another new beginning. And once again, we have a candidate whose experience perfectly matches an extraordinary moment of transition."
I'm sitting in INVESCO Field right now. Tens of thousands of Obama supporters are doing the wave.

What an insult to compare Obama's speech to Lincolns.
Posted by: Lily | Aug 31, 2008 12:08:56 AM
Yes, Obama is exactly like Lincoln - a strong Republican with decades of political experience before he became president. The Republican Party is the party that ended slavery. Mr Gore, why don't you go back to inventing the internet and flying around on your private jet from your 10,000 square foot mansion?
Posted by: HawkTheSlayer | Aug 30, 2008 11:46:44 PM
Al Gore lost that race for President. He is the only one responsible for his failings but the DNC want to prop him up like he has anything to offer. This man has NEVER has an original idea, he gloms on to someones else's idesa and wants to take credit for them. I will say he a loser in the 1st degree.

Al Gore says "Take it from me" Nah, that's ok Al, I'll pass on that. By The way Al, What % of ozone have you depleted this week in your private jet?
Posted by: badger1 | Aug 30, 2008 11:57:18 AM
You'll all have to excuse Al Gore, He is just exhausted from trying to save the world from greenhouse-gases, as he jet-sets around the world in his greenhouse-gas emmitting jet.

How delusional is Al Gore? Comparing a man (Obama) who associates himself with far left anti-american, racist ideologues to Lincoln,, Wow, ok, I better go back and check my history book, I dont remember Lincoln in that light.
Posted by: badger1 | Aug 30, 2008 11:38:41 AM
It is a joke to compare Obama to Lincoln, but what do you expect from the guy who claims to have invented the Internet? It would be more accurate to compare BO to Madonna, a pop icon with a knack for self reinvention.
Posted by: Asia2PA | Aug 30, 2008 9:37:31 AM
I started to read this, then felt overwhelmingly ill. Gore promises he would have sought OBL, but the FACT is the CIA was prepped to launch offensives and find him multiple times under the Clinton administration, which, along with that coward Tenent, was too nervous about the political ramifications and pulled back (BEFORE 9/11). It's easy to armchair quarterback, but that is an outright lie backed up by history.
Posted by: George | Aug 30, 2008 9:05:52 AM
I can see it now.... Al Gore speaking... "Barack Obama is just like Abraham Lincoln, and by the way, i should know, after all... I invented the internet!"

Al Gore has compared Barack Obama to Abraham Lincoln. We need to ask if Barack Obama has the same regard for the Constitution as Mr. Lincoln. After all Lincoln suspended the Constitution, habeus corpus and imprisioned the Governor and Legislature of the State of Maryland at Fort McHenry to keep them from voting for succession. Can you imagine the uproar if President Bush locked up the Governor and legislature of a state to keep them from passing legislation that he didn't like?

Senator McCain has spend the majority of the summer attacking Senator Obama for lack of experience. Today, Senator McCain chose a governor with less than 2 years in office and no foreign policy experience to be his running mate. Does Senator McCain believe that the country should be first or take a backseat for his political aspirations?

If history serves me correctly - the Civil war was actually a civil conflict. Since the confederacy did not want to take over Washington they simple wanted to succeed. Lincoln did not want to lose the attributes of the south textile industry He elected to wage war on the south.
Our 17th Irish American President wants to wage war on all our freedom.
O*Bama and Lincoln I guess you can say are the same in that aspect.

Tenth Amendment, United States Constitution:
"The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."
Somebody please point out where in the Constitution the right of secession is prohibited to the states.
I rest my case about Lincoln's insane position regarding secession.

Gore said the country was in the mist of peace and prosperity. If you recall G.W.Bush inherited a recession (actuall negative economic growth) from Clinton/Gore, as for peace apparently the terrorist didn't think so. If liberals want to lie to themselves, fine. It would be better if they pulled their heads out of the sand, reality isn't all that bad.
Posted by: Philip V. | Aug 30, 2008 3:34:44 AM
I actually missed Al for a while but then the other night I remembered how boring he was.
Why in the world would Gore compare Obama to a Republican?
As far as the three am phone call is concerned, Obama will probably still be up. He says he prefers to stay up late at night and watch sports on tv and then sleep late. Someone should tell him he can't vote present or just not show uo when he's POTUS.
Posted by: Melanie | Aug 30, 2008 2:58:03 AM
Obama has real ideas: Invest in green technologies to reinvigorate our industrial base, create jobs, spur the economy, and get us off of oil. Move more troops into Afghanistan, the real front in the War on Terror. Improve our standing in the world by ACTUALLY LISTENING to what other people have to say. America can not change the world single handedly or through brute force. John McCain is old and ornery and does not have the temperament to be Commander in Chief. He was a fine Naval Officer and has been a fine Senator. But he's NOT Presidential. Obama has a unique blend of vision, charisma, charm and grace which are possessed by only a few in each generation. No amount of experience can develop these characteristics. You either have it or you don't. As far as comparisons to Lincoln go, Abe suffered from depression early in life and leaned on faith to help him through. He led the nation through some of its darkest days. His exceptional courage and deep moral convictions allowed him to preserve the Union when all thought it would break. America needs that type of leader today, one who is guided by principles and is willing to do what is necessary to take our country in a totally new direction. McCain is wrong on so many things. He is a free-trader to a fault. He will continue to export jobs overseas to our enemies and competitors who manipulate their currencies and erode the value of the dollar by flooding world markets with cheap goods. McCain will grant Amnesty to millions of illegal aliens based on the false notion that a rising tide lifts all boats. Sometimes a rising tide can sink all boats as well. A last but not least, listen to what McCain says: he never says why you should vote for him, he only says don't vote for that guy. If that is the best he can do he should stay in the Senate,

A little history. Lincoln was a Republican who not only promoted the Emancipation Proclamation but who also REFUSED TO STOP FIGHTING WHEN THERE WAS INCREDIBLE PUBLIC OPPOSITION TO THE WAR. He stayed with the fight not to free the slaves but to preserve the union. In 1864, his DEMOCRAT opponent, McClellan, had a platform plank to not only quit fighting and let the Southerners withdraw from the union, but to also rescind the Emancipation Proclamation!! Can anyone fathom the irony of a Democratic Ticket in 1864 that wanted to rescind the Emancipation Proclamation? Their recolection of history is so shallow.

The source of Al Gore's money is, of course, oil. But oil wealth is nothing new to Albert Gore Jr. His senator father’s fortune and son Gore’s own portfolio today have gotten the lion’s share of their money from Occidental Petroleum and its eccentric head Armand Hammer, whose father founded the Communist Party USA and before his death acknowledged carrying millions of dollars in cash from Moscow to fund the CPUSA.
The Gore family has controlled up to $10 million worth of Occidental stock, and Al Gore Jr. has pocketed up to $200,000 per year by leasing mineral rights on Gore property to an Occidental zinc mining operation cited for polluting the adjacent Tennessee River.
Despite an apparent conflict of interest, in 2000, the Clinton-Gore administration in 1997 allowed Occidental Petroleum to buy 47,000 acres of the U.S. Navy’s Elk Hills strategic oil reserve near Bakersfield, CA.

Gore should thank his lucky stars for losing in 2000. He ended up making millions $$ with his carbon schemes and moronic movie, and he got the last respectable Nobel Prize (his winning lowered the prestige for all future winners to a basically worthless award). Truly the clown of our times who has sucked shallow thinkers into a soup of fantasy, folly and foolishness.

Bwahahahahaahahah, woooooooo!!!, that was a great one! Haven't laughed that hard in a while. Your precious president and cohorts are the one's who CONNED this country into a 'war against terrorism' in Iraq by manipulating the culturally and geographically illiterate american people's emotions using fear evoking propaganda. Who are you calling easily manipulated? Manipulation of emotions has been the modus operandi of the Bush regime since day one, Goebbels style.

Why does Gore always have the appearance of one under medication? Maybe that would explain such an outrageous comparison. This comic figure truely believes his delusions. Whats more insulting is the possibilty that he thinks most of us take him as gospell. Sure, every group has it rug eating, Kool-Aid drinkers; look at that sorry mob that was thrown into tears during the convention. They are not in command of themselves, and are easily manipulated. Whats even funnier is that they consider being ruled by emotions as a positive attribute---something to be proud of.

Gore is correct in one sense. Lincoln was one of the most oppressive presidents in our history. He exiled a member of congress for speaking in opposition to his policies. As Obama has demonstrated in recent days, he also intends to use the power of government to squash dissent.

Lincoln started and prosecuted a war of Americans versus Americans, that ravaged and laid waste to the southern part of our country and left a million dead and more twice that badly wounded or disabled for life.
George Bush started and prosecuted a war of Americans (and others) against criminal terrorists that cost 4,000 dead and many more wounded or disabled for life.
Lincoln is idolized as one of the greatest Presidents, while Bush is reviled by democrats as the worst one in American history? Something is wrong with this picture.
It is nothing short of a willful ignorance of facts, so that one can feel good about himself or herself.

Obama like Lincoln? I guess, they were both tall and gangly but that is where the similarities end. You cannot compare these two men 140 years apart...the world was a different place. I just can't conceive looking back and being able to say that Obama had the same impact on the country the way Lincoln did. I pray Obama will NOT be our next President.
Posted by: BabsNJ | Aug 29, 2008 6:06:03 PM
Wow when I heard this I was suprised how little Gore understands history. If Gore would have been president in the 1840's we would have to show passports to enter the Mexican states of Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and yes California. For those of you who don't these were the states that entred the union after the victory in the Mexican war.
Even though Lincoln was the greatest president in history he took the wrong stance against president Polk during the Mexican war. If you read his biography Lincoln took this stance to gain stature with his fellow whigs in the house of representatives. .

Hussein Obama equal to Lincoln, I think equal to Marx or Lenin would be a lot more accurate. Lincoln never advocated socialism of any kind. If you listened to Hussein Obamb's speech it was all about ushering in Socialism. I knew the tree hugger gore was not bright but I did not think he was outright stupid, then again his fantasy book the inconvenient truth may be the final evidence that he has the IQ just below a box of rocks
Posted by: 7papa7 | Aug 29, 2008 5:43:01 PM
Did Gore have a nervous breakdown after the election? Think about it. He conceeded, then he didn't. Then he lost and went away. We didn't hear from him for quite a while and when he returned he had that bushy beard, weird hair (not that it is normal now), a lot of extra weight and talking non-sense. Seriously, I think he did. That is why he won't run. He would have to disclose that.

It sounds like a lot of people here are enamored with war for war's sake. Do you really want another Civil War? Do you think Lincoln took as lightly his decision to enter war as some of the bloggers here do?
Funny, when I was in the military most of the people I heard talk like this either were not in the military making big bucks or on some career fast track looking for some scrambled eggs for their hat.

We would be at peace, we would have no enemies, everyone would be eating candy and cake three times a day and everybody would be rich. Also no pollution, no factories and nobodywould have to work. I can re-write history too. Words are cheap.
As for Lincoln, while I admire the man and what he did, not all was sweetness and light during his adminstrations. And more Americans died fighting a war during it than any other conflict.
Remember the Civil War there Mr. Gore?

All I know is Bush pulled us out of the Clinton-Gore Recession, which coupled with the 9-11 attacks (also attributed to Clinton's appeasement to terrorists could have been devasting.
But, Bush and Congress pulled us out. My 401k was up, my IRA was up, my property value was up, gas was reasonable, my wages increased, and everyone was happy because the economy was humming along.
Then a funny thing happened. Democrats were elected in 2006 and took oath in January of 2007 and the economy tanked. Gas prices doubled, foreclosures increased, stock market (401k,IRAs) plummeted, property values dropped like a rock.
Tell me WHO is to blame for the economy? Democrats in Congress...the same people who took vacation and turned the lights out on Republicans trying to lower gas prices for all.

The amount of intelligence and honesty G.Bush has demonstrated during his administration can fit comfortable on top of a mustard seed. The war was a lie, the poor economy is a result of trickle down economics, and the oil prices are a result of Bush’s nonexistence energy policy and getting in bed with the Arabs.
It’s just amazing to me to see how you allow Rove and his cronies to keep you in line by waving the abortion and gay rights flag….. They laugh all the way to the BANK.

He only saw himself as a humble man being molded into the office of President during the more tumultuous times in our nations history. But Obama clearly defines himself in the light of a new messianic hope to save us from ourselves, a man full of hubris who wants to redefine the Presidency.

Wow...you people are bitterly brutal....Does it really matter who wins? Really....does it really matter? No, it doesn't. Every candidate has been preaching change since I started voting in 88. I haven't seen any change in government. Same weak policies with pork attached to each bill passed. Last nights regalia was disgusting. Why conventions? Atleast, why convention blowouts? Just nominate the man, let him speak, and move on. Way to much pomp.....same for RNC...I expect a rediculous amount confetti and retards in the stands bowing down...... It was meant to be a simple process....Politics have become Hollywood, only the actors change. I'm not voting...and don't tell me I can't complain if I don't vote. I pay taxes...I can complain as much as I damn well want. If I don't vote, I can be blamed for whatever publicity hungry moron gets elected. It use to be, "Join the army if you fail", now I think it's "become a politician if you have no skills", anyone can do it. So...therefore, it does not matter.

Joe luv us--you're kidding, right? The war was about getting Saddam but was a great reason to get into the Middle East to protect our oil interests (U.S. economy). We have to occupy the Middle East for oil because you enviro-crazed libs won't drill a hole even today as it may kill some worms, plankton or seaweed.

You said it. Kerry hasn't mastered the art of pure hypocrisy yet. In order to reach that level one must first abandon one's need to anchor one's beliefs in reality. Gore is the master of masters.

John Kerry should thank his lucky stars for Al Gore.
If not for Gore, Kerry would be the biggest buffoon to ever serve in the US Senate.

Remember when Algore said he remembered his mother humming the "Look for the Union Label" song while she tucked him in at night? Then people realized he was 28 years old when the song was written. YUK! Pathetic fairy tale dreamers, these Dem's.

all all you feels need to remember is that when your john mccain speaks in front of any sort of crowd, the man cannot help but stare at the telestrator in front of his wrkinled face. i would assume it's because he cannot remember the actual speech, so he must recite word for word that which his cronies dictate for him. now - if any sane individual thought about that for a second, they would be asking themselves that if the dude can't remember his own self serving speeches to get himself elected, then how the hell could he have the mental capacity for far more serious matters? john mccain is a tool - just like george w. now i'm sure they'd both be great to have a drink with (especially georgie - he'd be fun) they are not sound thinkers.

Al Gore is one of the worst hypocrites along with Jimmy Carter that this country has ever seen! To even think about equating Obama with Abraham Lincoln reveals what a true idiot this man is!!!I thank God every day that this man was NOT elected President of the United States!

This guy is absolutely amazing! I truely believe that he is the biggest idiot that I have ever seen in public service at that level. He makes it sound as though HE would prevented the tragedy on 9-11. Yeah, just like HE invented the Internet. The man is a fool and a liar. Just the fact that he supports the Muslim Obama is enough to make me vote for McCain! What a complete fool!

Why won't this loser go away? His arm-chair quarterbacking makes for a good laugh. I love it when the dems bring out these reminders of why we shouldn't vote with our hearts and use our brains instead.

Lincoln - a Republican - was indeed a great president with little experience beforehand. He did, however, preside over the worst war in this country's history which began almost with his election and ended only shortly before his murder and someone else might have been able to handle it without a war. That said, someone needs to step up and have this man, Al Gore, put away as he is clearly mentally unsound and has stepped beyond his claims to having invented the internet to thinking he is somehow now the king maker or that his judgment has proven sound. It has REPEATEDLY proven unsound and if Al Gore tells you to bet on black you would be smart to bet the opposite.
